the people
The first inhabitants of Iran were a race of people living in western Asia. When the Aryans arrived, they
gradually started mingling with the old native Asians. Aryans are believed to be the ancestors of the people of present India, Iran, and most of Western Europe.
In 2008, the Iranian population grew to 72 million people from all backgrounds. Approximately 75-80% of Iran's
peoples speak Iranian languages (the main language known to the natives is Farsi). The largest ethnic group is Persian at 65%. The main religion in Iran is Muslim with 90% belong to the Shi'a branch of Islam (the official state religion) and about 8% belong to the Sunni branch.
